Flat or "the flats": a shallow section of water where game fish feed or spawn. Typically 3-6 ft deep flat areas usually with sandy, oyster shell, or grassy (or mix) bottom, sometimes the edge of a flat will drop off some dozen feet or more. During spawn the inshore fish spawn on these flats, after spawn they tend to move off around the edge of that drop off which is close to the shallow fish food source but also close enough if a larger predator fish comes along they can make a shallow run or dive deep when needed.
