My 1st Permit ever, and it's a hog daddy!!

I was fishing today with my friend Capt. Greg Synder again today up in Stuart FL. The day started off very slowly fishing along the beach. We saw tarpon that were acting super lethargic, same with the snook. There was bait everywhere too. They wouldn't hit anything lure/live bait. Just caught a half dozen spanish mackerel nothing to spectacular.

The ocean was very calm today. So since we weren't doing so well inshore we went offshore drift fishing with greenies/crabs looking for cobia/permit/dolphin for a change of pace. We fished between 4-6 miles offshore with little to no action still. With my half day trip only 45 minutes from being over we reluctantly reeled up cursing the unusual lack of action not typical for the Stuart area.

After knocking out 4 of the 5 miles on the way back to the St. Lucie Inlet, Capt. Greg said lets just drift over this one spot for with a crab for 10 minutes. We both threw a crab in and waited. Just as we were about to call it a day, wham my rod doubles over and line starts screaming off the reel. Fish on!! Then after a brutal 30-minutes I finally reel in my first permit. Not just any permit, but a 35-lb hog daddy(maybe even 40-lbs)!! Not sure because Capt. Greg's scale only went up to 30-lbs, and the permit totally bottomed out the scale.

Funny how monster a permit can make you forget all about 5 hours of slow fishing. Much thanks to Capt, Greg for another one of many awesome memories I have had fishing with him over the past 4 years. Even on a slow day he seems to pull a rabbit out of his hat to salvage a trip. He never gives up!! [email protected]
