Alabama's Coosa River Lakes Logan Martin & Lay lake This Summer

Capt. Reed Montgomery
May 17, 2014
Birmingham - Freshwater Fishing Report

Although spring is coming to an end the months of June, July and August are good months for summertime day and night bass fishing in Alabama as well. Especially if you are targeting largemouth bass, spotted bass and striped bass on the Coosa River System Lake's Logan Martin Lake and Lay lake.

* Both lakes are only 40 miles from Birmingham.

Shallow water bass fishing does not have to come to an end as well, although the hot, summertime weather may dictate fishing deeper water for some anglers. There are always some shallow water bass for anglers to target using the same lures they caught them on this past spring!

With the addition of many new "other" lures as well! So stock up, for probing both deep water and shallow water on both Logan Martin Lake and Lay lake, two lakes very similar in appearance and in bass fishing traits as well for some great summertime bass fishing!

Logan Martin Lake is near the town of Pell City and is crossed at mid-lake by Interstate 20 bridge, going east from Birmingham to Atlanta. Popular boat launches are Riverside Marina at the Riverside exit right before you go over the lake on I-20 and Lakeside Landing on the lower lake.

Lay lake sits near the town of Columbiana. Popular boat launch's are Beeswax Creek park boat launch a straight shot right down Hwy. 145 going east, at the Clanton / Lay dam exit just off of Interstate 65 going south from Birmingham to Montgomery. Also Paradise Point Marina boat launch is at mid lake.

Both lake are 50 miles long. The upper portion of both lakes is similar to a narrow river, but each lake widens into a more lake-like appearance at its midway point. Both lakes are also loaded with aquatic weeds, loads of wood cover, all types of rock cover and plenty of resident built piers, boat houses and marinas.

All good places for spotted bass and largemouth bass, that will hang around this cover during the summer season both during the day and at night.

Selecting lures for both shallow water bass fishing and deep water bass fishing (including choosing lures for both day and night fishing), for spotted bass and largemouth bass can show many anglers that may end up in an arrray of lures to choose from. So its best to just keep it simple.

Both lakes have weeds so weedless lures are a must for less frustration and less lost lures as well. The same for fishing deep water. Bring plenty of lures! Night fishing Logan Martin lake and Lay lake may call for selecting lures that do not hang up and lures "not so costly"
if you do have to replace them when lost.

* The lure list and fishing techniques for summer bass fishing goes on. See the summer fishing tips link at www.fishingalabama.com for lure suggestions and tips for bass fishing both lakes!
