Logan Martin Lake Al. returning to full pool and full of Bass!

Capt. Reed Montgomery
May 3, 2012
Birmingham - Freshwater Fishing Report

With water temperatures in the low-to-mid 70's and the lake level finally, slowly returning to full pool, the bass are moving into the newly flooded shallows. Usually, in years past, by mid April the lake is already back to full pool.

Just in late April, Logan Martin lake impounded in 1964, was down 3 feet. Now it is down 2.75 feet. Hopefully, by mid May it will be back to full pool.

What does this mean to the bass-chasing anglers on this fifty mile long lake, located about 30 miles from Birmingham? As with April, continue fishing shallow cover! Only now, the wood cover and rock cover, has added aquatic weeds!

Weedless lures like buzz baits, spinnerbaits, both plastic one-hook model flukes and two-hook hollow bodied frog imitations are good now.

Floating worms and lizards, other soft plastic shad imitations and Senkos, including bottom fished plastics and jigs, all work well in the 1-3 feet of water, that is now showing flooded grass beds along the lake's original (slowly returning to full pool), weedy shoreline.

Deeper bass will be holding along creek mouths, along main lake flats and drop-offs and around any points leading into small cuts and pockets. Some bass have already bed and some are still bedding. Try lipless lures and shallow to mid diving crankbaits.

Topwater lures fished anywhere early, late in the day, or during cloudy periods and during rain, are good all throughout the month of May!

Birmingham Fishing Forecast:

Some rain today with lows in the upper 60's and highs in the low-to-mid 80's all weekend. There is a 20 percent chance of rain each day and it is predicted to be partly cloudy all next week.

Target Species:

Largemouth bass and Spotted Bass
