Lake Eufaula - Freshwater Fishing Report
Lake Eufaula, Alabama August 7,2007 Lake level this A.M. is 189.91 Temp. avg. is 85 degrees ; clarity is muddy to murky.
Bass fishing continues to be a challenge. The high water keeps the fish in the grass where there continues to be plenty of forage fish. Patience and determination is the answer to a bite. Finding the bait in the area is a key right now and using a lure that emulates it as close will get you a bite. Look on the surface for dead or injured bait. Another answer is to place the fish you catch in the live well for a short period and look for bait in the water that may have been regurgitated. If you take a fish home to eat, always inspect the stomach contents for the clue you will need on the next trip. Fishing slow is the best bet to aggravate the slow feeding bass.Kanami's flash and the "Bug" have been producing as well as the Mann's Shadow. I have been fishing these with no weight on the line and if I wish to sink the shadow, I insert a piece of solder parallel with the hook shank in the nose of the bait. The ledge fishing has been slow due to the overcast days. As the sun appears, a deep running crank in a chartreuse color is working. I use a 20 plus so I can work it slower at the depths desired. Place your boat in 20 to 30 feet and work the ledge from shallow to deep. The fish have been on the drop. The hydrilla is spreading like wild fire and will soon change the fishing patterns on Lake Eufaula all together. Right now it is easy for the experienced "grass" fisherman to find fish in the grass. It acts as a incubator in cool weather as well as shade on the hot days. The problem is, it will soon take over the water and you will not be able to get to the proper areas to fish it. I have seen this happen to many Florida lakes and it is a shame to see a fishery as great as Lake Eufaula fall prey to this problem. Fishermen need to be careful about spreading it and be sure and check your trolling motor and boat prop when you load up. If you find any hydrilla on tour rig, place it in a trash container before you leave the ramp. Our tax dollars are not sufficient to control this outbreak without the help from fishermen.
The mayflies are still visible around the shorelines and the Bream are still feeding on them. Beetle Spins are the key here. Plenty of fun action early and late.
Catfish are always willing to give the angler a fun time. Floating a hook on a jug or large float has become popular here. Seems the bigger cat's hit this bait more than bottom fishing with a rod and reel. There is a 25 pounder swimming around Cowikkee Creek after the Bass Pro Shops Big Cat Quest was here in late June. That was an awesome sight to see such a large fish at the scales. Word has it that some 30 + pounders have been taken by one local fisherman.

Be safe on the water during these hot humid days. Take plenty of water, sunscreen and cover your head. If you are a dire-hard and can't give up the fishing when it gets really hot, find some shade in the creeks and catch a few bream on the ultra-lite while you cool down a little.
