Lay Lake Report by Reed Montgomery / Reeds Guide Service Alabaster, Al.(205)663-1504 Website www.fishingalabama.com

Lay lake in late September is now showing water temps in the mid-70's, matching the air temps of mid-70's predicted for this upcoming weekend. Saturday and Sunday shows no predicted rain and partly cloudy skies!

With water clarity fairly clear lake wide from little or no rain recently, both spotted bass and largemouth bass are now getting a real good look at your lures! Lures that have been productive like topwaters, spinnerbaits and crankbaits are good in shallow-to-mid depths.

Deeper bass are still caught on a variety of bottom fished lures, but not as deep as this past summer. Most bass are moving shallow with falling water temperatures and some are now being fooled on a variety of lures on bottom.

Lures like bigger ten inch worms, lizards, crayfish imitations, jig combos, beaver-type plastics, tube baits and creature type baits.

Fishing in depths from as shallow as one foot to as deep as ten feet is good both in creeks and on the main lake concentrating your efforts near creek and main lake flats, around any creek mouth, around islands especially on the mid-to-lower lake, also rock bluffs and standing timber are produccing some good spotted bass. Some spots are fooled on smaller finesse worms, tube baits, jig combos, drop shot rigs and deeper bass on smaller jigging spoons!

Around any weedy bank largemouth bass are attacking topwater lures! In the weeds try frogs and buzz baits. Along weed edges try zara spooks, Sammies, Strike King's KVD Sexy Dog, all walking type topwaters. These are good lures but use only strong monofilament or braided line, 20 pound test or better.
