Logan Martin Lake, Alabama for Big Spotted Bass!

Capt. Reed Montgomery
July 19, 2012
Logan Martin Lake - Freshwater Fishing Report

With constant current very evident each day, as water is generated for electricity (air conditioning) on the Coosa River Sysem, the Coosa River spotted bass are on the move.

Main lake points, all along and around any main lake island, points leading into the mouths of creeks, small cuts and pockets, rocky banks, boulder-strewn banks, rock bluffs and even man made rock walls, will all hold quality spotted bass this summer. Both day and night!

Fishing this man made current calls for the use of a variety of lure types, those that cover all depths, on top, in the middle and on the bottom portion of the water column.

Early or late in the evening try topwater lures like Zara Spooks, prop-baits, poppers, and buzz baits on these locations fishing shallow water.

During the mid morning hours change to deep diving crankbaits, 1/4 to 1/2 ounce jigging spoons, 1/2 to 3/4 ounce lipless lures (like rattletraps) Texas rigged worms, lizards, creature baits and tube baits or try swimming a jig combo.

But also try lures like 1/4 to 1/2 ounce spinnerbaits, chatter baits, swim baits, suspending jerk baits and shallow running crankbaits.

All of these are lures that tempt bass holding in the middle water column, where a lot of summertime bass suspend when the sun comes out.

There is another very popular mid water lure combo, the Alabama Rig. (See; www.theyellow hammerrig.com) Fish this multi lure rig where ever you see bass holding on your depth finder.

Allow it to sink to their depth and retrieve the rig slowly. Experiment with jig heads that weigh from 1/8 ounce to 1/2 ounce and use 50-80 pound test braided line.

Always use a long stought rod, (like a flipping rod 7-8 feet long) use very sharp hooks, and make very long casts.
