Logan Martin Lake Returns to Full Pool in April, Spring in Ala!

Capt. Reed Montgomery
April 5, 2015
Logan Martin Lake - Freshwater Fishing Report

Alabama's Coosa River Impoundment Logan Martin Lake Impounded 1964

Report (for first week of April 2015) written By Reed Montgomery / Reeds Guide Service (205) 663-1504 B'ham Al. Website ww.fishingalabama.com

I have fished, explored and guided on Logan Martin Lake near Pell City, Alabama for over 40 years. Thats forty spring spawning seasons!

Its always my favorite time of the year for targeting big, largemouth bass, big spotted bass and numbers of both species of fish on each and every outing in the years past. Their everywhere!

One problem many anglers often struggle with is the lakes low, often seemingly lingering, late wintertime lake levels. Especially for the last six months while the lake has been down over 5 feet below normal, full pool lake levels.

But all that is about to change along with many other changes taking place this month as well! The lake is now slowly being brought back up and Logan Martin Lake's fifty plus miles of water should be back to full pool by the months end.

Spawning bass and new growing weeds, flooded waters and both male and female bass in shallow water (less than 5 feet deep), is the norm for the lake for the entire month!

That includes the month of May for post spawn bass as well! So anglers should think "shallow" the next few months!

Water temperatures are now close to 70 degrees (the first week of April), the perfect bedding temperature of 72 degrees is close at hand! As lake levels rise so do the water temps and so do the bass. By May it will be back to full pool.

Soon water temps will be near 80 degrees and these warming waters will show post-spawn bass found lake wide throughout May and early June.

Topwater lures like buzz baits, zara spooks, poppers, prop baits, frogs and other topwaters all work...right now! If your not fishing with a topwater lure at dawn your missing out on some great big bass action in April and May!

Other shallow water based lures like spinnerbaits, chatter baits, soft plastic shad imitations and floating worms are good choices and they all cover shallow water fast. Crankbaits, jerk baits and an array of lipless lures as well.

Slowing down, anglers now have hundreds of soft plastic lures to choose from. Still, old favorites still catch big ol'bass!

Stick with strong fishing line, but always fish for Logan Martin lakes shallow bass with bottom fished lures, that show as light of a weight (and sinkers), as possible.

Lures like worms, lizards, creature-type lures, crayfish imitations, tube baits, plastic chunks, beaver-type plastics and other bottom fished lures like jigs and jig combos, can just easily be cast in and around weeds, wood cover, rocks and the lakes rocky bottom.

* Places away from the banks that hold spawning and post spawn bass are flats, hidden underwater spots in 1-5 feet of shallow water that many anglers fail to fish and they miss a lot of big bass, often found holding right under the boat of the bank beating angler.

* Three lures come to mind

Shallow-running, square-billed crankbaits or shallow-running, round-billed crankbaits, either or both and this includes selecting from suspending or floating model hard-bodied jerkbaits and 1/4 to 1/2 ounce lipless lures. Fish all of these lures, those that cover water fast, on 14-15 pound test monofilament of flourocarbon line.
