Orange Beach Fishing in October

Capt. Don McPherson
October 18, 2012
Orange Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Orange Beach Fishing in October was red hot. The nearshore fishing for kings and Spanish mackerel was good all month. The bull redfish appeared in mid October. There were dolphin(mahi mahi), blackfin tuna and sailfish caught within 8 miles of the beach. This was not typical Orange Beach Fishing for October. It was was awesome. We are anxiously awaiting to see what November will bring. The king mackerel, Spanish mackerel and bull redfish should continue to bite through November and December. Bull redfish should be biting nearshore through early Spring. Trolling #3 spoons and stretch 25 and stretch 30 diving baits should catch you some bull reds. Always keep an outlook for diving birds and bait action on the surface. This will be a good indication of bull reds feeding. You will most likely find some bonita, kings and Spanish mackerel in the mix. Cast a curly tail jig or even a topwater bait into a school of bull reds and hang on. These bull redfish will usually weigh 20 to 30 pounds each. The typical north wind in November will be blocked by land and the condos. This scenario will usually create nice calm sea conditions within 2-3 miles off the beach. Just what we like for some fun with redfish fishing.

Orange Beach Offshore fishing was also great for amberjack, grouper, scamp, vermillion snapper, kings and wahoo. This good offshore fishing should continue in November. You just have to watch your weather forecast and fish between the cold fronts. We can have beautiful calm seas between cold fronts. Fishing for redfish can be a superb option in exchange for an offshore fishing trip. Remember, gag grouper season will close on October 31st. Red grouper, scamp grouper and deepwater grouper will remain open.

Tuna fishing on the offshore rigs should be good in November. Again, just find the windows between cold fronts. Yellowfin and blackfin tuna can fill a box quickly on a good bite. Plenty of fishing remaining in 2012. Get in your boat or select from one of many charterboats in Orange Beach, Gulf Shores and Dauphin Island. It's time to enjoy some Orange Beach fishing.
