Smith Lake - Freshwater Fishing Report
Smith Lake
December 31st, 2012
I spend an average of 24 days a month on the water most months. December is usually my slowest month, due to the inconsistent weather, holiday events, traveling and kids. December 31st is one of my favorite days of the year, it signals the new year is here. Also for stripe fisherman it signals the start of the best time of year to catch them. During January thur April I'll be on the water as many days and nights as I can. This is prime time for Smith lake, it's the time you have the best chance at landing some of the biggest fish in the lake. January usually brings more stable weather, while it will be cold we will have fewer major temperature changes. The more stable the pressure and the less major temperature changes equals more consistent fishing. Late January through March offers anglers to experience some of the best night fishing for stripers in the country. While there are endless amounts of lakes all over the country with people fishing for stripe at night. Nothing compares to fishing at night on the 2nd cleanest lakes in the country. Where on a average night you can watch schools of stripers swim through and around underwater green lights. On most lakes the water color would limit visibility with in a couple feet, but on Smith you can see them over twenty feet deep. While the night fishing will remain pretty good all the way through June, January through March is prime time. So if you have been thinking about a trip and you want a chance at the big ones get ready cause it's time. I will be running both day and night trips throughout the next 6 months, before giving way to the summer heat and fishing only nights and early morning. With all the rain over the past two weeks the lake level has come up 7 feet. Leaving the lake only 4 feet below full pool, I know thats music to some people's ears considering it was getting pretty sketchy at some ramps. With the average water temp. around 53 degrees we've seen the fish starting to move shallower over the past several weeks. So if you looking to catch some of the biggest fish in the state, give me a call and I'll be happy to go over everything.
