Smith Lake - Freshwater Fishing Report

Smith Lake
December 4th, 2012

I hit the water around 6:15pm on Monday night. It was my first time in several week for me to go out at night. I've been waiting for more fish to start showing up before I start taking late afternoon-night trips. What I found last night wasn't mind blowing, but it was better than a couple weeks ago. We started on a light by Mallard point that had several fish ranging from 5-15 pounds and hooked up as soon as we got there. I dropped a spoon and hook a good fish, but it ran me under the dock and into a cable and wrapped me up. After trying to work the fish free, it broke me off after about 6 minutes of rubbing and running. Right as I broke off me friend hooked up and had the same thing happen. We saw his fish make a quick run and wrap him in the light. By that time we decided we had scared them off, so we headed to our next light. We stopped at about six lights throughout the light. Three of the six had fish on them. No monster groups or any real big ones, but we caught two off each of the other lights before spooking the fish. We caught all our fish on live bait and spoons, with spoons catching the most. I wish we would have made it out on the water before sunset and been able to fish the first hour of darkness. All have a map on the light we fished below, by this evening.

Fishing has picked up, but the fish continue to move. Once you find some fish and mark them. There's only a 30% chance that they'll be there when you go back over them. If they are there it's game on, Both live bait or jigging spoons are my top two options to catch them. Most of the fish are still between 35-65 feet and are being caught from the south and north ends. I've been fishing from big bridge to millers flats for the last couple weeks. With very few trips south of the island before bear pen creek.

Also don't forget on December 8th, 2012, Round 2 of Fishing 24-7 Striped Bass Tournament at Speegles Marina. Checkout my website for all the info you'll need. Plus you still have a couple of weeks to take advantage of my Christmas Gift Certificate. You get a 6 hour trip( up to three people) for $250, gift certificates are good for one year from date of purchase.

Layer up this time of year, you can always take things off but you can't put on things you didn't bring.
