Striped Bass Attack

Smith Lake - Freshwater Fishing Report

Smith Lake
August 5th, 2011

After one of the coolest evenings in a while, I had a client interested in stripers, so we met at Big Bridge and were on the water by 5:00a.m.  We headed to my first spot and made a couple passes around the area. No bites and not what I was looking for on the depth finder, so we moved. We started heading south, toward Coon Creek. We didn't even make it that far before things got hot.  We were trolling umbrella rigs when one pole doubled over and the line started ripping off. I stopped the boat and grabbed the other rod to get it out of his way and within a few reels I hooked up.  We doubled up and boated two stripe that weighed 10 & 12 lbs. The umbrella rigs we were using had bucktail jigs with curly tail trailers. Both rigs had shad color bucktail jigs, with the only difference being the weight of each. After boating them, we made several passes hooking up about every other pass. The bite was great for about an hour…our biggest fish weighed 18 1/2 lbs. After that we stopped at one more spot and he was able to catch two more on live shiners. It was a great day to be on the water, with the cloud cover and the cooler morning. It made for a great bite and a lot of action. Hope it rains everyday this month.
