Goodnews River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Fishing Report from Spotted Tail 8/17/09
Greetings from Goodnews River Lodge (www.epicfishing.com).
The week started with an incredible day. Bob Mankin and Rick Otto joined me for a morning of silver salmon fishing. The weather was great and we got several fish on both streamers and poppers. In the afternoon we headed up the middle fork of the Goodnews to mouse for trout. Bob and Rick both got numerous rainbows and dollies, as well as three grayling on the mouse. On the way back downriver we sightfished for more silvers and had some hot fishng, with Bob getting several on his four-weight.
Lots of big dollies have been caught up the north fork. Chums are all spawning and lots of dead ones now litter the river. The gulls and ravens are almost too fat to fly. We saw three eagles today. They looked plump too. Trout fishing is off slightly, with fish scattered all over the river.
Another day I fished Jim Vanalyk and Howard Tuthill for silver salmon, who have over a century of fishing experience between them. Both started flyfishing as youngsters. Now Jim is in his eighties and Howard is 91. They flyfished all day, starting with poppers and later switching to streamers. They got about three dozen fish caught and released.
Yesterday and today I got to fish with son Alex for a few hours in the afternoon. He fishes with a take-no-prisoners style, but he doesn't suffer the inevitable dry spells very well. I enjoyed spending the time with him. Today we cast to spawning sockeyes, hoping to get a salmon to eat or maybe a dolly or a rainbow. It didn't work, so we went for silver salmon and got a half dozen in thirty minutes.
Life is short- go fishing!
Life is great and I love my work!
