Long Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

This has been an incredible week for the Kingfisher. Big fish have been around in great numbers in our end of the sound. I thought this past weekend was awesome getting a 50 pounder and all but it will be hard to match my last trip with regular customers Don Luth, Sean, and Sam. Don and Sean are experienced fisherman and really know how to set up and fight these big stripers. Anyway, the trip started out as a mirror image of last year for Don and Sean. First drift with live bait they hooked up on doubles with 30 pound fish. Being true sportsman they released any fish that was easily unhooked and in a very healthy state. Well, being true sportsman the fishing gods smiled upon Sean later in the trip as he hooked up with the striper of his life. After almost breaking his finger setting the hook on this fish it wasn't until the fish got to the boat is when we all saw how big the fish was.

My Mate Matt kept his composure and netted the huge fish even though afterwards he explained how nervous and excited he was. The fish measured out at 51 1/2 inches and approximately 52 pounds. The best part about the whole thing was being the true sportsman Sean is, it didn't take any convincing to take a few pictures and let the big fish go. Kudo's to Sean and anyone else who let's the fish of their life go back without injury. The bigger the fish the more difficult to revive. I like to have my mate hold the fish in the water as I drive slowly. It may take 5 minutes or so but the fish will revive. When the fishes dorcal fin stands up and it lightly bites down on your thumb you know it's ready to let go. I also like to give it a tap on the back as I let it go to stimulate its swim reflex.
On Saturday, Tony Gregoric brought out his son Scott and nailed the bass again. The fish were all taken on live and chunked up hickory shad. They kept a few fish for the cooler and released a dozen more unharmed. Scott took the big fish honors with a nice 46 incher.
