Long Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

Sunday 5/11/25 I took a ride to The Gut and The Race with my good friend Pete from our home port in the Connecticut River in Old Saybrook, CT to check on the state of the fishery in Eastern LIS. The CT river was a mess with the muddy flood water full of debris including large tree limbs, logs, branches and even a propane tank that could cause big damage to boats and props. Our first stop was Plum Gut (between Orient Point N.Y. and Plum Island) during the beginning of the flood tide. The water temp on our way across the sound was around 55 degrees. We arrived as the tide was just getting moving with only a few birds scouting the area. The plan was to use artificials only (3 wayed plastics and diamond jigs). We made 5-6 drifts in the Gut and decided to head over to the Race due to lack of life. Arriving in the Middle Race area we were greeted by a good amount of birds (mostly Terns) and a sense that it was game on! The birds we feeding on undetermined very small bait that also was present on the sounder as large clouds of bait with occasional Stripers chasing the pods. We three wayed Strike King swim baits on 1/2 oz. jig heads in 160-70 ft. of water with no takers. Noticing some fish working on bait in various depths of the water column, and the presence of mackeral, we decided to switch to 8 oz. diamond jigs speed jigging with a few pauses on the way up (which can sometimes be the key to getting strikes) to no avail... We then moved over to the Eastern edge of Valiant Shoal (Green Can area) with similar results and lessening bird activity as the tide picked up speed. The Race in general had a lot of bait with some Stripers mixed in and a water temp. of 52 degrees. Typically this time of year the bite is much better than we experienced for sure. We only saw 1 fish landed by the rest of the fleet on this day. I do believe that if the bait holds in the area the fishing will turn on very soon.
