Long Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report
Norwalk Island has produced some small Striped Bass, with Bridgeport Harbor and the Housantonic River being the area hot spots. Flyroders are doing well with Striped Bass up to 28 inches using sinking lines in the upper river. Chartreuse flies, fished slowly on the bottom, have been doing a good job. I recommend fishing the bottom of an ebb tide, casting the fly upstream, letting it sink to the bottom, strip in enough line to stay connected with the fly as it drifts down stream; when the fly rounds out start a slow retrieve. I use an (Orvis Depth Charge ST-400-S) this is a 400-grain fast sinking line. When fishing new and full moon Spring tides I switch to a 28 foot lead core shooting head on a 10-wgt rod. The Connecticut River is starting to wind up with its spring run of Striped Bass. The river is holding good size schools of Blueback Herring, Shad, and Alewives. This is an excellent Spring and Summer Fly rod fishery. I recommend using larger flies, that resemble Bluebal Herring, sinking lines in the deeper areas of the river and intermediate lines on the flats on the Southeast side of the river. Long Island Sound water temperatures are still a bit cool for this time of year but I expect the reef fishing will get a lot better by the end of the month.
Good luck Capt. Bob Turley North Coast Charters
