Eastern Long Island Sound

Long Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

Coastal Connecticut fishing report

8/15/2000

Capt. Bob Turley North Coast Charters

This Passed week, Fishing has been a little tuff. The fish are here but it has been hard to get out to the fishing areas. With repeated low-pressure systems battering the Northeast, all this rain is keeping the water temperatures below normal for this time of year. The good news is we have tons of bait in the area, I have not seen schools of baby Bunker like this in Long Island Sound For a number of years. Good size schools of Bluefish and Striped Bass are feeding on this small baitfish. Off the coast of Milford Fly fishermen are boating Bluefish from 6 to 14 pounds on two inch long Bunker patterns, fished on sinking lines. The Housatonic River is producing Striped Bass in the 30-inch range. This past week I ran a trip out of the Connecticut River with Rob Parkens and his fatherinlaw. Rob is a fresh water fly fishing guide on the upper Housatonic River in Cornwall Connecticut. We fished the Race, Little Gull Island, and Plum Gut. Rob and his fishing partner managed to catch and release 40 Striped bass to 29 inches.
