Long Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

During the past week Mother Nature made fishing a bit more challenging. Cooler temperatures and strong easterly winds kept many fishermen close to shore or inland. The Connecticut River is hot, with reports of fish being taken throughout the river. Some spots near the Hartford area (Glastonbuty up to Enfield) are holding lots of stripers. These fish are feeding primarily on herring. However, the taking of these baitfish(aelwives) is closed in the Hartford area and its related covers. Therefore, imitating the herring with 7" bombers and sassy shads will do the trick. Fish can also be taken on eels, sandworms, or chunk bait.
We were out three times this past week and boated the best fish of this Spring (42" 38 lbs.) by Ed Garrison of East Hartford, CT. The fish hit a chartruse/white parachute jig with a white pork rind trailer. Valient Rock gave up other stripers from 28-34" on the incoming and outgoing tides this past week.
On Thursday evening, 5/17, the Bindas party caught all the fish they wanted. Many of the fish were carrying sea lice, indicating fish that had just arrived from their migration. That morning a fishing buddy and I found the fluke hiding on the south side of Fisher's Island. We totaled 11 keepers, some throwbacks, and a few skates. We also picked up some fluke aroung Noyes Shoal and the Stonington breakwall area.
More and more fish will be arriving daily. Bluefish should be showing soon also. There is an abundance of squid on the local reefs. This will provide plenty of forage for arriving predators. The Watch Hill reefs should be a hot spot as well as Plum Gut, Valient Rock and Bartlett's reef.
Charter dates are filling up quickly so call today for a prime fishing date. Don't be left at the dock.
