Long Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

This past week the boat was out of the water for a few days for it's 20 hour check-up. We were able to get on the water Friday 6/1 and Saturday 6/2. On Friday the Pete Marchese group caught all the stripers and blues they wanted. Fish were all caught around Valient Rock. Trolling parachutes on wire and drifting eels after dark produced excellent catches. The bluefish were caught in a little deeper water outside of the Valient bouy (110-50 ft). On Saturday the weather kept us inside Fisher's Island Sound. This did not stop us from landing some good-sized fish. Trolling chutes once again paid dividends as we were able to land fish from 36" to 42". There still is an abundance of squid in the ara and hickory shad are around in catchable numbers. This abundance of bait will provide quite an incentive for predators to hang around.
We did not put any effort into catching fluke this past weekend. This past week did not present very many good fluking days. As a result, fluke reports were down. However, this doesn't mean these flatfish aren't present. You can drift Misquamicut and Isabella beahes, as well as many others, and pick up fluke as they spread out in search of food. Try using sand eel with a squid dtrip behind a spinner for added attraction.
The next few weeks should provide some outstanding fishing. Stripers migrat out of the rivers and along the coastlines combining with arriving bluefish will bend many rods in a frenzy of action. We still have a couple of openings for June, call for availability.
