Long Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

The offshore season has begun. We took our first tuna trip of the season on Aug. 16th. We started trolling at about the 500 line just south of butterfish hole. Before we could get the second line out we were hooked up on a 30 lb. yellowfin. Within the first hour we boated three yellowfin from 30 - 50 lbs. On our way back we had fun with a dozen or so skipjack. Warm water has moved in to around 10 miles off Montaulk or Block Island respectively. Start your troll around the 750 line and head south. When you hook up on a descent fish throw out some butterfish and keep trolling the area or start chunking. If you want to get a good starting point find a sharp temp. break from one of the satelite temperature services. We are heading out on a weekly basis for tuna if the weather permits, so I will keep you updated in upcoming reports.
As for the inshore action, fluke are still a no show. We have been catching a few throwbacks with a keeper mixed in every once in a while. Pleanty of sea robins though. On the other hand the striper action has been incredible. Our clients have been limiting out on just about every trip with linesiders from 25 to 40 pounds. The key is to get out before sunrise or start at sunset, and bring along the live bait. We have been using live shad but eels are usually a sure bet also. Follow the three R rule (rocks, reefs, and rips) when choosing a fishing spot. A good chart will point out these areas in your neck of the woods. Also, a local bait shop can be very helpful.
If your interested in a tuna trip this fall give us a call soon before we are all booked up.
