Long Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

THERE HERE!
The first migration of Striped Bass have shown up in the Eastern end of Long Island Sound. Like clockwork stripers leave their wintering grounds and invade Long Island Sound. The shorelines, rivers, and reefs are prime locations to find these awesome fish. They can be caught using a great variety of methods. Primarily because they eat just about anything they can swallow. My favorite method "liveling", is not only extremely exciting it is very productive on big bass. I typically look for those areas close to concentrations of bait where Stripers can effortlessly pick off an unsuspecting baitfish. Kingfisher Charters specializes in live bait techniques for big bass, specifically livelining Hickory Shad. Find a concentration of shad, usually early morning or sunset, they can be seen flipping out of the water chasing bait. Flip a small jig out and hold on. They are hard fighters on light tackle, so much so they are referred to as poor man's tarpon. Take them to the closest stucture and let them swim, I've watched a 40 pounder playing with my shad on the surface in ten feet of water like a cat plays with a mouse before devouring it. It's quite an awesome experience. Eels, bunker, worms, so on and so on all work as well. Now that's all you have to do is get out there! Good Luck and be safe.
Look for my weekly reports starting next week for Eastern Long Island Sound (the race, watch hill, etc.) as well as Block Island, Montauk, and Offshore.
