Long Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

It doesn’t get much better than this. Friday the 19th we took out a group for a striped bass trip and hammered them. 13 bass total, all over 32” with the biggest tipping the scales at 38 pounds. All the fish were caught in 10 feet of water on light tackle, “talk about fun”. The bass have started their summer pattern, feed at sunset through the night into morning and rest during the day. You can still get bass during the day but most will be small aggressive fish actively feeding. If you’re looking for the cows fish deep during the day or at low light levels. These big fish will move into very shallow water to feed when the sun is down and they can ambush prey without much effort. We will be taping a show “Fishing Adventures with Capt. Ray Kelly” on Mon. It airs in New York, Mass., New Hampshire, Fla., and California. We will be concentrating on livelining Hickory Shad for big stripers in shallow water. Look for it this fall!
Finally, we took out Chris Wahl and friends for a fluke trip and did very well. We hit them very well right off the bat and then the wind picked up and it was tough getting a drift. Try bumping the motor every so often to get yourself a drift, and try to go in the direction of the tide. This makes your offering look more natural. All in all we ended up with 12 nice keeper fluke, a few shorts, of course those pesky skates, and a few sand sharks.
