Eastern Long Island Sound and Block Island Sound

Capt. Mark Anderson
July 20, 2003
Long Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

It was an incredible week of fishing aboard the Kingfisher. On tues. The 15th John Gore and family were treated to flat calm seas, beautiful offshore weather and non-stop action with blue sharks from 70 to 275 lbs. The highlight of the day was John’s 12 year old son caught and released a 70lb blue shark on 20lb test and a light spinning rod. On thurs. Rick Gavin from Long Island came over after seeing our fishing show “Adventures in Fishing with Capt. Ray Kelly”. Needless to say he made the right choice. Having never caught a striped bass in their lives, I don’t think they were able to really appreciate the kind of banner day they had. Seven fish came overboard with several lost during the fight. The biggest striper measured 54 inches and weighed in at 55lbs caught by Rick’s 12 year old son. What’s amazing is we also caught a 52inch, 50.5lb fish earlier. We also had a 40lb’er and a 42lb’er. The three other fish were in the 30lb range. All fish were taken on live Hickory Shad. They got a better idea of the incredible day they had when I explained most striper fisherman go their whole lives without ever hooking up with a 50+lb. fish, never mind catching it. Friday night George Chase’s group saw much of the same with steady action. The biggest fish in the tipped the scales in the upper 40’s. Saturday morning Wilf Kalback and friends had grand ideas of catching a trophy sized striper, and they weren’t disappointed. Final tally; 14 fish caught, all from 25 to 45lbs. Like I said, an incredible week of fishing aboard the Kingfisher.
