Long Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report
What an incredible weekend for the Kingfisher. The excitement started for our charters Thursday, and didn’t stop until Sunday. Thurs. I took out a group from Vermont, a late father’s day present. The two boys were great. Everything was exciting to them, especially their battles with stripers and blues. We tried for some live bait to drop down in the race for stripers but only caught blackfish instead of porgies, so we decided to troll instead. As soon as the first line went out, fish to 36” were taking our umbrella rigs steadily for the remainder of the trip. Friday, we ran a fluke trip with the Silvio group to the south side of Fisher’s Island. We set up by the eastern point in dense fog with a slow bite of skates. Picked up quick and ran to a couple more spots before camping out at one that bent three rods and a missed hit all within 20 yards. The rest of the day consisted of working back and forth over a 50 yard area and limiting out on fish from 20” to 27” with the latter weighing in at 8.75 lbs. Fri. night a group from Derby began by hammering fish on the troll during slack tide. One after the other for an hour and a half, the tide picked up and the bite slowed but we got one of our biggest stripers just before we left. A bonus 30 lb. fish at a hump outside the Thames on the way in put the tally at 10 stripers, from 30” to 45”, and a bunch of blues.
Capt. Mark on two trips saw the same action, slow but steady pick during the middle of the tide and hammering them during slack. Sunday, an afternoon trip saw a limit of stripers come aboard from 30” to 42” and a bunch of throwbacks. The Gerianos group needless to say was busy all day. Stripers and blues were caught on umbrella rigs with sassy shads and parachutes, fluke on bucktails tipped with squid and sand eels. All in all it was a stellar weekend aboard the Kingfisher.
