Long Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report
Here’s the rundown of our last week of charters aboard the Kingfisher. On Tuesday the 17th Lorn Scanlon came down from Canada and was treated to some very nice stripers in the 30 pound class as well as some big hammer blues. Live porgies were the ticket; saw some false albacore working over bait around Watch Hill while we were loading back up on porgies. Wednesday, Amy Dutchover scored the biggest fish of the year when she battled a 55 lb. striper. She had never been fishing in the ocean before so I had to explain to her that she just caught a fish that many avid striper fishermen never see in a lifetime. Thursday, I called a group that had a night trip planned and asked if they could come earlier to catch the same tide as the previous two days. Luckily for them they were able to, in the first two hours they limited out on stripers from 30 to 40 pounds, again on live Porgies. Sat. morning Bill Frazier braved the strong winds and was rewarded with much of the same action. Plenty of porgies, and plenty of big stripers. Again, they were able to catch the same tide as the previous 4 days. Finally, a cold front moved in for Sunday’s trip and the striper bite shut off. We tried just about every reef from Watch Hill to Groton with no luck. Had to save the day catching blues in the middle Race along with about 100 other boats. Monday, we went offshore to the canyons on a friends boat and got 4 nice 60 pound Albacore tuna and the bonus for the day was a 400 pound class marlin took one of our ballyhoo but spit the hook just before we were going to set up on him. What a site watching him swimming up on it with his mouth wide open. I am sure he would have spooled us but it sure would have been worth it seeing him come out of the water.
