Long Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

Weekend report from the Kingfisher

Saturday was a slow day for sure. Couldn’t ask for better weather, but the fish were being stubborn. The morning trip started out with a great group of guys who were good fisherman but it was just one of those days. It was very tough getting Hickory Shad but we did manage one each for the group. Dropped four down on three way rigs and on the first drift snagged all of them on a *(&*# sunken lobster buoy. A bluefish cut one in half and the next drift lost the last shad. So much for live bait. Went over and trolled the race, fish were there but not on the bite. Managed a few stripers and finished up catching some descent fluke but that was tough going as well. The afternoon trip didn’t fair much better, trolled the race hoping those fish that were there earlier would turn on but again they were showing up on the finder but not cooperating. Caught a couple anyway and decided to find some shad and try livelining. Sadly one shad was caught, trolled it through a couple spots and WHAM a big hit and splash in about 8 feet of water. The reel was spitting out line as the big Striper took off and then POP goes the hook. Somehow the fish spit the hook. Just how the whole day was going, so it figures. Sunday morning a group from Springfield, MA and friends from Michigan came down. I wasn’t feeling very confident but I was optimistic. Planned on trolling reefs farther west to find some fish. As we pulled out of the marina my mate Mike spots a Hickory Shad jump. We switch gears real quick and started casting for them, caught 7 shad and took off to catch the end of the tide. First drift, a 43” 38 pound striper within two minutes. Second drift 38 inches, Third 40 inches, then the tide died out, took a run to find some tide and picked up two more nice fish, a 43” fat 40 pounder and another a 30 pound lunker. A prime example of how fishing can change from day to day.

All in all a beautiful weekend to be out on the water.
