Long Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

Last weeks report from the Kingfisher
Sorry for the late report, this is our busiest time of the year and for good reason. The last week has been stellar to say the least. Going back to Wednesday the 13th Harold Hart group came up from Florida to get in on some Northeast striper action. They scored with 14 bass for the group with two of them being 48 lbs. and 52 pounds respectively. Thursday morning Larry Noel’s group started with a bang, three 43” bass on the very first drift. They finished up with 17 bass all over 36 inches and a bunch over big hammer blues mixed in. Friday morning Rick Gavin came over with his son from Long Island and for the third year in a row they hammered them. They tallied 10 lunkers from 36” to 45 inches. Friday night the bass finally took some time to rest, George Chase’s group came out for a family trip and caught all the shad and porgies they wanted but only 1 bass and 1 blue to show for it. The kids had a ball catching the bait anyway. Saturday the 16th was back to normal for Bruce Lichtner’s group. They were able to manage 8 bass from 38” to 42” and the usually half a dozen bluefish over ten pounds each. Sunday more of the same for the Gilbert group. No problem getting bait and a banner day with the bass. Monday morning slowed down a bit for the Lee group from Springfield Mass. Only 6 bass up to 43”. For the average fisherman it would have been a great day but since they limited out easily the first two trips they took this year they were spoiled so it seemed slow to them. No complaints though they will be back again very soon, they have been bitten by the big striper bug. In short the rest of the week was mixed; Tuesday morning was a slammer with the group from Meriden with the usual limit of big stripers, tues. afternoon was slow but Tommy T’s eight year old son won’t ever forget the bas he caught, it was half his weight and came up to his neck when we held it up for him. Wed. morning brought back a fun group of guys from Derby, David Ostrom’s group was only able to get one bass last year for their efforts but it was enough to get them back out this year and they were rewarded big time. It was sketchy though at first because we had trouble finding bait but luck turned and they showed up. They easily got there limit of lunkers from 38” with a few trophies up to 43” mixed in and a bunch of big hammer blues. Funny thing was David’s wife said “why do you guys go on charters you never catch anything!” I am sure there won’t be any of that talk again. Thursday morning looked like it was going to be the best of them all with a 43” and a 40” bass on the first two drifts then someone turned the switch off and the bass shut down. Probably the strong moon tides turned them off because the first two cam at the beginning of the tide and they scored one more 5 hours later at the end of the tide. All in all, an amazing week for the customers on the Kingfisher.
