1/29/09-2/1/09 Costa Rica Slamin!

Los Suenos - Saltwater Fishing Report

This week I had the chance to go on a trip with some friends Todd B, Todd M and James. This was a special trip, not only would we be out of the country, but in a completely different
body of water. The Pacific Ocean! This was my first trip to this special place but neither of my friends were strangers to this place they called "Pura Vida" (Pure Life). That indeed it is and we got off the plane thursday in San Jose, Costa Rica. We cleared customs and met up with Capt. Josh Foster of
www.HookedOnCostaRica.com who set this trip up and personally guided. Josh drove us from San Jose to Jaco Beach through the mountains and making a quick lunch stop to get a bite. When we got into Jaco Josh dropped us off at our atv tour that he had set up for us and dropped off all our luggage's at our house while we rode atv's through the mountainous trails and stopping at cloud covered mountain tops and natural waterfalls. After three hours of riding atv's, Josh picked us up and dropped us off at the house we would be staying at only 5 minutes away and 10 minutes from Los Suenos. The night rolled through with only anticipation for the next day. What felt like an eternity finally came and it was time to get ready for a day of fishing with the crew of the Bethina. Fishing aboard the Bethina with Capt. Glen and his mates Min and Russ only equals to some intense fishing. We cruised out to the Pacific in comfort on the 36 Glasstec out to 25 miles. Within ten minutes I was hooked up to my first Pacific sail and after Min and Russ cleared the lines with lightning speed Capt. Glen put the boat in position for the clean release. After two more sailfish Glen was talking about going to a area he knows of to go try to catch some marlin the next day. The sail fishing was a little slow, but team Bethina worked hard and it prevailed. Not 20 minutes had gone by after Glen had told us about his marlin game plan for the next day and we had a bill fish whacking the left teaser. Russ noticed this was no sailfish and picked up the 50 wide and pitched back the marlin bait. The rest is history as we had a black marlin going nuts and smoking the 50 wide. Todd B was on the rod and after a toe to toe battle and an excellent job from the crew of the Bethina Todd released his first black marlin and high fives were going around the boat. We ended our day 3 for 3 on sailfish and a nice black marlin. We finished our day with smiles on our faces and only wondering what we had awaiting us for the next day. Glen wanted us to wake up an hour earlier since we would be making a 60 mile run out to an area were he wanted to fish. So saturday rolled on through and we arrived at Los Suenos Marina just as light was breaking through the dark morning and our journey began out to the pacific again this time with one thing in mind, Marlin! Capt. Glen made the run out to his destination and the sound of the throttles backing off got all of us to our feet and anxious for the first bite. Again within ten minutes we had a sailfish hooked up and Todd M made quick work of the fish and out the spread went as we trolled around spinner dolphins. Soon we raised a marlin only to have him get bill wrapped on the leader and loose him. Out went the spread and I was talking to Min and Russ about our bites and how all of our bites so far had been on the long baits. Well that was soon
changed as a blue marlin crushed a lure 10 feet from behind the boat and off to the races as I had my hands full with my first blue marlin that was all lit up and going ballistic. Thanks to Min and Russ for clearing the cockpit and
Capt. Glen's boat maneuvering we soon got a clean release on my first blue marlin and that made a billfish slam for 2 days. Words could not explain how happy and excited I was to have the privilege to be out there and have that experience. We finished our day 1 for 4 on marlin and 2 for 2 on sails. Between both days we ended 5 for 5 on sails and 2 for 5 on marlin and smiles on our faces wondering when the next trip back to pura vida would be. I want to thank Todd B for making this trip of a lifetime possible and also to Todd and James . I also want to thank Capt. Josh Foster for setting the whole trip up and making the trip what it is. Thanks to the crew of the Bethina for 2 days of fishing that none of us will ever forget!!
Now its back to Miami or the place I call paradise. We will be heading out this week to do some flats fishing and Team Knot Tight will be getting some practice fishing in for some upcoming tournaments.
