Biscayne Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

This is the time of year when we can expect light winds and smooth calm water in the early mornings but this summer has been anything but typical. Yesterday we had marginal visibility and 15-20 MPH east winds which made it a bit challenging (wind is good but wind and poor viz is not). We got to our first flat and right away start finding bones here and there but none close enough to have a shot. On the bow of my skiff for a change I finally have a shot at a school moving against the strong incoming tide and I take the cross wind shot placing the cast a good six feet in front of them and after a few moments I feel the quintessential take of a bonefish and we are off to the races. After dumping 100 yards of 8lb test off the spool and some shorter runs thereafter we get the gray ghost to the boat for a photo op.

My time on the bow was up and I was back where I belong, on the poling platform. I kept putting my angler into position for numerous other shots at bonefish but they were unsually spooky in light of the strong winds. With deteriorating visibility I poled along the leeward side of some mangrove island troughs looking for small tarpons but they proved to be uncooperative. We had to cut our fun day of fishing short but I'll be back at it later this week.
Biscayne Bay Fishing Forecast:

The weather forecast is calling for light winds for the rest of the week and into the weekend which would give us some nice calm mornings to fish for tailing bonefish and as the tide comes up some tailing permits too. Expect the permit fishing to remain strong and the bonefishing to slow down towards mid day, just in time to hunt for permit. Don't forget the resident tarpons too if you are looking for the much coveted grandslam.
Give me a call if you want to book a trip and remember, have fun out there!
