Fishing in the Cold!!

Capt. Raul Montoro
January 22, 2009
Biscayne Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

For the past two weeks I've been mainly bonefishing in Biscayne Bay and Flamingo (Everglades National Park)
The fist and second week of January the bonefishing was phenomenal. I was finding tailing bonefish early in the morning with water temperatures in the mid 60's. Some might say that that is impossible, but I've seen it many times. The mid to late afternoon has been the most consistent with bigger schools of fish. Once the water temperatures reach 69 to 70 degrees is when they feel the most comfortable to get on the flats and start feeding.

The mutton snapper and grouper fishing in the finger channels and inshore wrecks keep producing nice fish from time too time. On the day's where we have several day's of warm weather, I've been seeing several permit while bonefishing.
There are plenty of big barracudas on the flats now trying to stay warm and their always fun on fly and light tackle.

I fished Flamingo several day's last week and it started off good and through out the week it kept getting worse and worse the strong wind and cold weather. Monday through Wednesday produces mixed bags of Snook, reds, and plenty of trout and Goliath grouper. Once Thursday came around we had a cold front moving in and brought winds up to 25mph and cold weather. I was off the water by noon.

That's it for now,
