Boca inshore snapper and Gag gouper

Boca Grande - Saltwater Fishing Report

7/20/2015
Today's trip I was going to assist my partner Capt. Scott out using his 24' flats boat. We had three men and an eleven-year-old boy from Tennessee. They wanted some fish to eat then maybe some bigger fish later.
We started at day light by going to catch bait for the day. This was easy with Scott's 12' cast net. Three cast and we were done. We had time after cleaning the boat, so I started catching trout in the same spot. Today we were using Scott's equipment with 20lb fluorocarbon leader and a # 2-circle hook. I lost three trout in a row and changed the hook out to a # 5114-owner circle hook. That worked with an instant hook up. I teased Scott about him using bream hooks for this kind of fishing. I do not know if he knew it but I changed out all of his "bream hooks" as the day went by. I guess it is what you like to use and works for you. "Scott the bream hooks did not work for me".
We picked up the customers in Boca Grande channel and were off to a local dock for Snook, Redfish and Trout. This spot produced a small Snook using a free lined green back.
Our next stop we would target mangrove snapper. We rigged up a ½ oz sinker to keep the green back on the bottom. We caught six or so keepers and many shorties. Jordan (11 year old) battled and caught a nice Snook. They also caught two keeper flounder. Our next spot was a local reef and the target was snapper and Gag grouper. They caught 8 to 10 keeper mangrove snapper and Matt caught a keeper 25" gag grouper.

We moved to a grass flat that had a sandy channel running through it. The channel was full of trout that were caught free lining live green backs.
We moved to the docks and had three hits by Goliath grouper, but no hook ups. It was a great trip with good people from Tennessee. I want to thank them for the two types of venison jerky that they left for us. They make it from September through January each year. It was good eats.
