Fishing Again, Menu Tarpon

Capt. Andy Boyette
August 19, 2008
Boca Grande - Saltwater Fishing Report

I took a much need rest in the Florida Keys catching some several limits of Yellowtail Snapper, Mangrove Snapper and of course Spinney Lobster the first part of August. After returning my schedule was full for another week of tarpon fishing having been off the water for over three weeks and my network of other fishing guides on vacation I had to go it alone. I had heard that tarpon where still in Boca Grande Pass but the first day of the being back on the water the wind was blowing 20+ from the west and Boca grande Pass was rough. I decided to make a run 20 miles north and take a look at the area me and Scott Hughes worked back in April. Once there I immediately began seeing tarpon rolling on the surface. I new we where in business, knowing that the harbor has a lot of catfish this time of year instead of looking for bait we began casting swim baits in the area and during the course of the week we jumped 11 tarpon in the 60 to 130lb range,. Out of these fish we landed 6 including the one that jumped in the boat with us.

Charlotte Harbor should continue holding tarpon through this month and in to September the only variable will be the tropical storm moving across Florida today. I have clients all this week that left the area until it clears up. I will be back at as soon as the weather breaks and hopefully more tarpon will have moved in from offshore to seek refuge from the storm.

Redfish are beginning to school up in traditional areas and snook season will open soon. The fall fishing is phenomenal in the Boca Grande and Charlotte Harbor area until the first cold front arrives. The possibilities are numerous with Tarpon, Kingfish, Redfish, Snook, Trout, Cobia, Tripletail, and many other species cooperating all at once.

Below is a photo of a winning tarpon form the PTTS TV series where we took a 1st place finish in the final week. With that win we finished overall 4th in the points where 2nd 3rd and 4th was seperated by less than 60 points. Overall we had a great season and look foward next years tarpon tournaments.
