If you think the tarpon season is over you better tell all the tarpon in Charlotte Harbor. As in all years past that I can remember when the tarpon cool off in Boca Grande Pass and leave the beaches they fill up the harbor in good numbers and give us a month long mini tarpon season. These tarpon take considerable skill and effort to be consistent, the bait they are eating is small and these fish can frustrate you as they bust the water and eat right at the boat. But once you figure out how to finesse these weary beasts you can enjoy some late season pooning. They are readily taking a variety of artificial lures and cut bait. Look for the pods on both sides of the harbor and approach under trolling motor and be courteous to other fisherman in the area some of us make a living on the water, and there is nothing more irritating than taking someone’s money to fish for the day only to have a couple of inconsiderate, and inexperienced people mess you up.

Redfish are starting to tighten up in small schools with some big fish being taken, which is an indication of the annual fall schooling. My suggestion is to get out early and work your spots before midday as the water temps are making these fish a little sluggish. Not to mention the air temps are making me a little sluggish as well.

Snook are still holding in the passes and the beaches and the fast out going tides are the most productive. You need to break out those jigs, lures and other artificial baits as the natural baits such as shrimp and green backs are on the small side. The water clarity is an issue with all the rain so you may just have to work a spot and if it is not productive move on to the next.
