Boca Grande, Florida Fishing Report

Capt. Andy Boyette
March 8, 2006
Boca Grande - Saltwater Fishing Report

Spoing Fishing

With the exception of a few cool mornings March is ringing in spring and the water temps are on the rise. There is a good amount of bait showing up and the snook are moving out of the rivers and will be in full force on the flats. Sizable catches should be found at most mangrove points where the water flow will allow for ambush. Besides the live bait jerk baits rigged on 1/16 jig heads will take good numbers.

Redfish schools are being encountered in the early mornings stealth is the key. With the water gin clear these fish can be very weary and a slow quite approach will allow you the opportunity to scan the area for these schools as they wake around on the shallow grass flats. If you know the fish are or have been in the area sometimes waiting and watching is the best approach.

King Fish should be migrating up the coast starting this month. In between windy days a good rock patch or artificial reef should be holding bait, which in turn will bring in the Kings. My best days have always been anchored up and chumming the area, it easier for these fish to find you than for you to find them.

I always start thinking about tarpon this time of year it is still my favorite fish. As the days get longer and the humidity sets in it triggers these big silvers to make the annual migration to the area. Boca Grande should be in full swing by the first of May with good beach and harbor action starting in April. I only have a few days left in May and June is about 60% booked so if you are planning a trip for tarpon most good guides who concentrate on the Mighty Tarpon Book up early. So gets you plans together and give me or your favorite tarpon guide a call.
