Boca Grande, Florida Fishing Report

Capt. Andy Boyette
December 7, 2006
Boca Grande - Saltwater Fishing Report

Almost Winter

Wintertime is fast approaching and water temps are falling, which means its time to change your game plan. Florida winters no matter how mild they seem still affect fishing. The tides are at there lowest, which means some areas may become inaccessible, and some areas during the low tide may be void of any water. This is a good time to explore and find deeper flats with deep potholes find these and you will more than likely find the fish. More often than not these fish will be in higher concentration because of the lack of water.

Winter is also the month I switch form looking for live bait to catch, and simply make that trip to the bait house for shrimp. Most shrimp offerings this time of year are seldom refused and are on the menu of every inshore species that swims. Redfish trout and snook live primarily on shrimp for the whole winter.

Trout fishing is beginning to pickup but its catch and release this time of year. Snook are plentiful and best bet is strong incoming tides. Redfish are` staging up in potholes on shallow tides and are very receptive to shrimp as well as plastics. If the mornings start out cold its best to wait for the afternoon when the sun will more than likely warm the water, a few degrees is all it takes to make a big difference.

Grouper should be on the move coming closer to shore. Amberjack should be stacking up on deeper reefs and wrecks. Kingfish should be mostly gone with the exception of large residents. And cobias are present along with some tripletail near shore.

Tarpon season will be here sooner than you thank and as always I am starting to book trips for prime time May-June so its never to early to make arrangements.
