Boca Grande, Florida Fishing Report

Capt. Andy Boyette
January 7, 2007
Boca Grande - Saltwater Fishing Report

New Year Looking Good

Trout fishing has re-opened giving everyone another option for taking home fish dinner. Most of the deeper flats and potholes are holding keeper trout. The bite has been on the light side so a fast action sensitive tip will pay off. Natural color jerk baits are the only bait being used on my boat right now but with the warm weather there is a lot of bait around.

Red fish are in small groups and pairs and are in potholes on the low tides and then move up to the bushes as the tide rises. When these fish start towards the bushes a crab imitation is your best bet. Most of the areas are seeing a lot of pressure the warm weather is not only producing an early crop of bait fish but also making the boating season longer.

Snapper and grouper have been very good offshore with 4-5lbs mangos and nice keeper gags. Chum bags on the bottom and cut bait for the grouper while a shrimp tipped jig gets heads up for the snapper. Amberjack are also stacking up on some of the deeper wrecks with any thing that swims for bait.

Tarpon season will be here sooner than you think so start planing now the prime months May and June will get filled up. With the weather pattern we are seeing I expect a hot tarpon season.

Good Things Come To Those With Bait.
