Boca Grande and Charlotte Harbor

Capt. Van Hubbard
April 24, 2003
Boca Grande - Saltwater Fishing Report

OUR FISHING IS BACK TO ALMOST NORMAL; BIG SNOOK AND TARPON AROUND THE CORNER. 4-24-03

We have been busy. We caught some nice keepers last week and several almost big enough snook. So far this week we got lots of almost and a few to big snook. Life is tough; snook to big. We had three 20 pounders on Tuesday and 2, 16 pounders on Wednesday; oh yea. John Sciales age 7, from New Jersey got the just to big ones, 36 inches each. He was so tied after the first one Dad, Chris had to help with the second one. Pop did not complain either. Dr. Tom Pitts of Reno and his sons, Arnie and Matt, each got a twenty pounder on the Tuesday trip. They had several snook on fly, a bunch on minnows plus a 31 incher for dinner on Thursday’s trip.

Minnows are hard to catch but work well when we finally catch em. The best news is no signs of any red tide recently. We picked up a new boat in Naples last Saturday and delivered her to Boca Grande, we saw lots of tarpon off of Ft. Myers Beach. To far for us on any but calm days, but silver kings are almost here. They have some tarpon showing up around the Big Pass already. Our fish should be starting up by the next big moon.

Trout and redfish are improving but not up to speed right now. We are getting some but not dependable yet. We saw a few pompano last week but did not get to play with them. A few sharks are teasing us, we got one to take a fly today but it bit us off.

I’m beat but happy; miss you and wish you were here to help us real in the big ones. Captain Van Hubbard
