Boca Grande and Charlotte Harbor

Capt. Van Hubbard
August 4, 2003
Boca Grande - Saltwater Fishing Report

It's not to late for great tarpon fishing.

We enjoyed some awesome tarpon action this past week. 8-3-2003

We invested some time looking around but it paid dividends. Some days we had several double hook ups. We had two today. Some of the tarpon were big. We had three today well over a hundred pounds. These are huge fish when u you consider they have already spawned, dropping as much as 20-30 pounds of eggs. With recent rains and some clouds keeping water temps cooler these fish are strong. We are using 50 pound superlines and getting runs that will impress any off shore big game anglers. We had several fish strip off at least two hundreds against a screwed down drag in a heartbeat. Do not expect to go get red-hot action all day every day but we have had our best fishing of this year late. Our season was by no means bad it’s just even better now, most of the time.

Ward Curtis, of St. Pete., his namesake nephew and a friend all caught big silver kings this weekend. We had about 20 fish in the air, jumped on Saturday and Sunday mornings trips. We fished live baits and had the time of our lives. I have done this for a living all Summer since 1981 and still get goose bumps from every tarpon jump. Nothing I can afford offers so much excitement. Ward has fished with me for 10 years. We had 158 snook before lunch one day. His knees were shaking every time we had a tarpon in the air. We all got so excited we forgot to bow several times and lost other big ones. We had big ones jumping right next to the boat several times. It was as much fun as you can have with your cloths on. I’ll try to get back with more later cuz I’m back to re-rigging our gear for tomorrow. Captain Van Hubbard. PH 941-697-6944
