Boca Grande - Saltwater Fishing Report

Red hot fishing; snook, redfish and trout are chewing.
10-1-03
Snook, reds and trout are biting.
We are enjoying great action during recent trips. We have had multiple fish on for an hour sometimes. Snook and reds are popping baitfish and biting as fast as we can bait up and cast.
Vern and Kim Robey came up from the Florida Keys to sample our fishing. Captain Vern guides bonefish and permit from Sugarloaf Key and is an outdoor writer. We missed them at our Florida Outdoor Writers Fall Convention this year so they came up fishing. We were so lucky the reds turned on and took over. Vern had five on fly and I even got into the action and whipped two on fly. The fish averaged almost 30 inches. We did get a few slot fish for them to take home for dinner. We all caught all the reds we wanted, 10 – 15 each, reeled in before leaving them biting and looking for snook. Vern got a nice 28 inch snook and we had several almost big enough before we called it a day.
On Saturday’s trip we had some guys from Nashville. Sam Cusano has moved down to Sarasota and had his buddies down for a fishing trip and golf. Mike, Steve, and Howard all had fished before but Sam, the beginner, caught the biggest red. Mike got hot on the snook and took the crew to school. Steve managed to lasso one and while we commenting on how rare this was Mike lassoed one too. The bright red circle hooks were hung on the leader as it wrapped from the mouth back around the dorsal fin. This crew was going to catch any fish that got close to their hooks. We ended up with a nice mess of snook and reds for their dinners while visiting. We caught and released some trout and jacks to.
Monday was supposed to be our trip with radio host Mel Berman but the rainy forecast lead us to postpone this one until later. One of our neighbors, John Redmann works for the power company and was sent home from work early due to rains. We have been trying to get his wife Kristine and daughter Katie in on the hot action. We slipped out during a drizzly moment between down pours to try our luck. Lady luck was with us we got our minnows and headed to a hot spot. They were chewing. We got bites every cast. It was short and sweet as the tide went slack and they shut down. The rains were picking up so we went home happy. We had several slot reds and some bigger ones. Kristine got a perfect 30 inch snook for her dinner and big fish bragging rights. She also had a big 30 inch redfish. Katie helped us and reeled in several reds, jacks and snook. Then she retired to the baitwell to play with the minnows. Kids can be entertained while you fish exploring the fascinating minnows and fish in the contained well.
The West Palm Beach Fishing Club folks are due in to help us catch a few this weekend. They are skilled and ready; so Let’s Go Fishin’. Captain Van Hubbard
