Boca Grande and Charlotte Harbor

Boca Grande - Saltwater Fishing Report

Big snook and giant tarpon highlight our week.

10-12-03

Giant tarpon and snook, plus some nice slot fish too.

We had a few days of hot tarpon action this passed week. Some of the fish were very large one was well over 150. They are not dependable but hot when we find them. Our first fish was the big one and she jumped 5 times getting closer to the boat each time. My dependable Motor Guide 107 trolling motor helped us stay clear and let her put on the show for us. We had several other jumps before we photographed, revived, and release her. Then we hooked and landed a double header, two tarpon at a time. Snook were as consistent as we find them. Loads of baitfish have them feeding actively. We even coaxed a few over 40 inchers to co operate. They had teased us all week but only bit when they felt like it. Imagine that females that do what they want to! Long time fishing buddy, Bill Caldwell of Boca Grande had some great tarpon action on Friday and managed two whopper snook plus a slot fish on Saturday’s trip. We saw lots of Spanish Mackerel and caught some small sharks up to 25 pounds.

Baitfish are still thick and helping hold schools of gamefish. Weather is great and we are enjoying the good fortune. The forecast is good and we are looking forward to a few more weeks, at least of good action. Very cold fronts with high winds will stir things up but should be a few weeks off.
