Boca Grande and Charlotte Harbor

Capt. Van Hubbard
April 4, 2004
Boca Grande - Saltwater Fishing Report

fishing is fair and will improve when the winds back off.

Some nice snook but the wind has slowed us down.

Mike Trask of Port Charlotte and Nova Scotia brought his son and his girl friend out on Monday. We found plenty of fish but the snook were not in the slot for dinner. They caught some fine jacks and had tons of fun. If was nice to see more snook showing up even though they are not biting aggressively yet.

Tuesday Ward Curtis and guest Tom Miller of St. Pete. Drove down to try their luck. Again we had to work for our dinner fish but enjoyed lots of action. Ward finally got a keeper snook, Tom had a nice red and they both had slot trout. We had more jacks and some we almost 10 pounds. We had a big bluefish and several reds almost big enough. Snook action is improving but not up to speed yet.

Wednesday John Alderman brought son and a friend down from Vermont. They weather was cool to me but fine to them. We had fine minnows and again caught lots of fish but slot snook are still had to come by. The big jacks saved the day again. Trout were even hiding today. The west winds restricted our movement. The lee shores were fishable but bumpy in-between.

Thursday was blown out so I went up to Dorado to see the new Let’s Go Fishin’ boat. She is beautiful. A Navy Blue hull and tan interior. Will start rigging her out next week.

Friday was still windy but the early morning was ok. we had very nice minnows but fish were not biting aggressively. Ted Williams of Fleet Wing in Auburndale had Jerry Church and Irene with him. We got the big jacks going and the snook just teased us again. JC. Finally got a whopper 37.5 inch snook to the boat after lunch. This one bit a big pinfish. We caught about 20 smaller snook and a few reds. The bluefish stole a few hooks and gave us a thrill. We had a slot fish jump off almost to the boat; the ultimate tease. Everyone had to laugh, we wanted it to much. They were already planning next years trip.

Plain and simple the fish are around and if this wind ever drops off I expect to get them going. Water temps are close but not as warm as two weeks ago. I’m sure we have kings off shore but can not get to them yet. I’m excited to get the new boat going next week. Let’s Go Fishin’ soon. Tarpon are just around the corner to. Captain Van
