Boca Grande and Charlotte Harbor

Capt. Van Hubbard
May 16, 2004
Boca Grande - Saltwater Fishing Report

Tarpon are here.

5-16-05 fishing report.

Tarpon have arrived but the sharks are here to.

Silver kings have made their annual appearance. The numbers are not up to par yet but increasing daily. Many are big, a hundred pounds or more. Silver torpedoes engulfing our minnows and crabs then exploding as they feel the resistance from our hooks. Strong giants ready to give us the show we dreamed about.

Sharks are here with the schools of big sardines. Following along to pick up the week. Unfortunately jaws also pray on our hooked fish. We have rigged up some really big gear, (30 wides with 450 yards of 50 pound mono), to turn the tables. If your coming down and interested in huge sharks some 10 feet long and hundreds of pounds, eat your spinach and come on down. We have both tarpon and even bigger sharks.

Trout are still cooperating when we play with them. Many are undersized but enough slot fish for a meal or two. Some nice fish over twenty inches to. They are abundant on the healthy grass flats and edges. Minnows are great baits if you cast net them but plastics are fine.

Redfish are here but challenging. We have reports of better fish up in the Harbor but have not had the clients to check that out. Why look for fish when you have plenty of tarpon to play with. Snook are closed but we do have some for C&R. they have not ganged up in bunches yet.

Baitfish are showing up outside with warmer waters but winds are keeping us inshore. Kings are out there if winds would let us chase them.

Fishing is good and getting even better. Things will break lose if these winds ever back off. It will get warm for us to. Summer is about here. Kids will be out of school soon. Let’s Go Fishin’, soon. Captain Van Hubbard.
