Boca Grande - Saltwater Fishing Report

Giant tarpon are back at Boca Grande.

5-21-04 Boca Grande, Tarpon fishing report from Captain Van Hubbard.

Big numbers of giant tarpon are back at Boca Grande for the Summer. We jumped a dozen tarpon on Monday; boated 5. am learning the new camera and have a ways to go. 4 big tarpon to the boat on Tuesday and several more opportunities. Action is hot and weather has been great. Breezes have kept us from being hot most days.

Councill and John Rudolph brother that grew up in St. Petersburg, Florida spent the last week fishing together with me. They love tarpon fishing and we got so much we took their Mom snook, trout, and red fishing on Fridays trip. The tarpon were so thick we had to catch the guys ones for the road; accomplished by 8:30 AM. Then we went a played with some nice snook. They each did well but Mom out fished the guys. Then we went after reds and trout. The trout were small but we did get a few then worked to locate some big redfish. We managed a boat double “Super Grande Slam”. 2 tarpon, about 20 snook, 5 oversized reds and a few trout, what a day! We had several tarpon in the 150 class this week. All we can handle even with 50 pound heavy duty spinning gear. The waters are crystal clear and long leaders are necessary. Lively baits help. It’s important to be sure your presentation is on target or you’ll become frustrated after several near misses. Accuracy is critical to insure favorable odds of a bite. We used some corks and some free lined. Crabs, minnows and pinfish all worked but a different times.

We had a cancellation for Monday and Tuesday so if your reading this and can make it call or e-mail ASAP. Let’s Go Fishin’, soon! Captain Van Hubbard
