Boca Grande and Charlotte Harbor

Capt. Van Hubbard
January 27, 2006
Boca Grande - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishin' is improving with the god weather.

Every day is very different right now.

One day the sheepshead bite the next they just tease us. We get on what seams to be a pattern with the pompano and get surprised. Trout are here and co-operate one day then disappear the next. We expect the gulf to be stirred up with on shore winds but find it stirred up and calm today. One thing for sure fishing is not boring.

We are enjoying some great weather and good fishing. It’s not as consistent as I’m used to. The bird life is interesting too. We saw several young eagles today, plus the usual adults. The dolphin followed us from spot to spot. Every time we found the trout or pompano the dolphin ran em off. Some folks must be feeding their released fish to em. We love the critters but do not feed em. Just like the pelicans they are learning to feed from fishing boats.

We have taken some fine fat pompano recently. Several over two pounds. This fishery should just improve as things warm up this spring. The sheepshead are full of roe and will be gathering by the passes soon. Anything these bait stealers lack in glamour they make up for in taste and scrappy battles. When they school up they get stupid and we catch em good.

Some nice reds are available but challenging to catch most days. If you can toss lures we have a good chance. They will eat the live shrimp but it’s tough to get a bait in front of the reds. The sheepshead are to thick. Trout are hit and miss but very good when they decide to feed. Cool windy days are challenging.

Let’s Go Fishin’ soon. Capt. Van Hubbard
