Boca Grande and Charlotte Harbor

Capt. Van Hubbard
March 26, 2006
Boca Grande - Saltwater Fishing Report

we had some nice fish this week.

Action was hot before this front.

We enjoyed some good fishing on the two days the winds let us out last week. Weather is always a factor but this was one big chilly blow. It’s still blowing Sunday as I put this together. I was looking forward to doing a TV show again with Captain Bill Miller but Tuesdays TV show shoot with was blown out and will be rescheduled. Bill and I did some shows years ago in the 10,000 Islands. It was fun and very productive. We tore up the snook and reds on Cottee jigs. I even got a beautiful 25- pound snook right behind Frank Sargeant of the Tampa Tribune and Florida Sportsman. He had just cast to the same tree and came back to look at our mega snook.

Wednesday, Dick Barrett and son Todd joined me for a day of snook fishing. Baitfish were co-operative and I picked them up at Stump Pass Marina at 8AM. Bait can be a challenge so I was glad I found some nice sized ones. We had to work at getting the fish to bite but we finally did. We tried some reds first but they just teased us. Next we worked to try some snook. The snook were not as large as they had been but they liked our minnows. We landed several and a nice mess of speckled trout for their dinner.

Thursday Lou Freedland and friends joined me. I got lucky and found some nice minnows in deeper water so I called and woke em up with a rousing “ Let’s Go Fishin’ now. I meet them at Palm Island early and we started out. Most folks want snook right now and the warmer weather was perfect. We found some big fish that would not bite. We did get a few smaller ones. We moved and got into some more action. The next bite was much better but still no slot snook. We landed some nice trout and one 26” redfish so things were going fine. The wind shifted and I decide to go back and try those big snook again. This time we landed several smaller ones before a 30+ inch dandy grabbed Dan’s minnow. After an exciting few minutes chasing it around the boat he landed her. We also had some nice jacks. They ended up with a slot snook, reds and 3.5-pound speck for their family fish dinner.

Life is great but I just messed up something here so now I need to back up and fix it. Let’s Go Fishin’ Captain Van Hubbard
