Boca Grande and Charlotte Harbor

Capt. Van Hubbard

Boca Grande - Saltwater Fishing Report

staying fishy but it's not easy.

Every day is a new day.

Each day is so different then the one before this year. We get good fish one place and they disappear the next. Kingfish are around most days but challenging some. We had two nice 15 and 18 pounders yesterday and worked to get a bite today. We had a nice hungry school of cobia yesterday that just looked at baits today. Today we caught several nice big redfish from 10 – 17 pounds. Oh yea, did I mention we were 4 and 7 miles offshore when we caught em? Any way that should tell we are experiencing some very unusual fishing so far this year.

We find some nice snook near the passes two weeks ago and then the cooling east winds ran them off. Now with water temps at 80 and perfect, they are gone. Not in the gulf or back in the creeks? One here and two there but not in numbers we saw them weeks ago when conditions were no even good? They seem to be hiding waiting until the season closes? They are not really that smart and this may well help us have more spawning fish this summer. It always amazes me how Mother Nature manages to make this work out if we don’t HELP too much. Look at all the baitfish so far even after they were whipped out last year. We did some cooperation from a few nice snook this week. Mike and Paul Russo took a father and son day to share fishing and they landed several smaller snook, plus one slot snook and red for dinner. They are from Tampa and used to fishing around the docks. They really enjoyed fish in on the flats with mangroves for scenery not homes.

Anyway I wanted to post some new info and this is the best I can do, as these fish are as confused as I am! Let’s go Fishin’ soon. Captain Van Hubbard
