Boca Grande - Saltwater Fishing Report

great fishing now!

Fishing is fantastic!

I am sorry it’s been so long but we have been catching fish. We closed out the snook season with some great catching. Our last trip on Friday the 28th was the best of the year. More slot fish than we could keep plus some smaller ones and even a few that got away. We also are finding a few reds. Many are too big, 28-35 inches, but a lot of fun. Trout are hit and miss. We have enjoyed some good action it’s just not predictable. We got a nice pompano on our first cast last Thursday but had to settle for some snapper to make our dinner. Spanish Mackerel have helped us make a mess of fresh fish for dinner this month. We had a great high water bite today and added 7 fat 2-4 pound macks to the cooler.

The tarpon are here. We see then daily and catch a few when customers want big fish. We have silver kings both in the Harbor and outside in the Gulf. They do manage to hide sometimes but when they come out to play you can see hundreds of big fish. We had several nice pods of poons around the boat while we mackerel fished. We put out some larger baitfish for the tarpon but bigger macks just grabbed em. Oh darn, more fish for dinner. The last big mack cut 50-pound mono leader, very nice mack I got a good look in the crystal clear water.

It’s getting warmer but not hot yet. The local waters are as pretty and clear as the Florida Keys and a lot fishier. The trip is nicer with traffic slowing as many folks went back north for the summer. We like to have company for the cold weather but it’s nice to have the roads and restaurants back also. I do have several days open after the 13th so Let’s Go Fishin’ if you can get away from work soon. Things are great and expected to get even better. Captain Van Hubbard

PS a happy young man after his birthday fishing trip with dad and grandpa.

Dear Captain Van, I had an awesome time catching that tarpon. I told all my friends and they could not believe I caught such a big fish. I will always remember my 12th birthday. Thanks again for the best fishing trip ever.
