Boca Grande and Charlotte Harbor

Capt. Van Hubbard
May 20, 2006
Boca Grande - Saltwater Fishing Report

this week should be back up in catching.

Our local fishing has been up and down like a rollercoaster ride.

Who knows what to expect from our weather these days. We have enjoyed so hot action and calm seas recently. The last week however was blown out with strong west winds. Cooler weather systems do pass thru in May but so many and with these strong winds is unusual. The good news is it will not last forever.

We are going to get red hot tarpon action as soon as these wind patterns go back to the normal east pattern. We had plenty of fish and big one. They are running around in the Gulf waiting for east breezes to pull them back to the beaches.

Snook are closed and appear to have been hit harder than we thought by last year’s red tide. We do have some and a lot more are over due. Time will tell but with all the baitfish whatever is here will do well. Our catch and release fishery should develop as soon as the weather returns to normal.

We have some reds and trout but not as good as we expect. Hard to say why yet but we’ll know more soon. Mean while the macks are here if we can get to them. Again tons of baitfish minnows are good for the fishery. But fish are eating well and not stupid, yet. We had fun with some big jacks on recent trips. They are strong and help make our day. It’s been challenging but we expect to get back to hot action a day or two after the winds swing back to the east.

Let’s Go Fishin’ soon. Bookings are going fast don’t miss the great tarpon action this year. Captain Van Hubbard
