Boca Grande - Saltwater Fishing Report

Cooler temps will help some fishing.

Winter finally catches us.

We did slip out and catch some fish for dinner ahead of this cooler weather. We found scattered pompano, bluefish, ladyfish, whiting, and mackerel to keep poles bent. I enjoy a fresh fish every few days. The time on the water is always educational; we saw dolphin, eagles, osprey, white pelicans and so much more. We saw more sheepshead and several snook of all sizes. Business could be better; we have had a minor red tide bloom but the negative press has been more harm than the minor fish kills so far in this area. It’s been great to have such warm waters to fish and now the cooler temps will help trout and sheepshead bunch up better. It’s going to be interesting to see what fish do with normal temps. Maybe even more fish will move south to us; and it’s almost time to spring migrations to come back north too.

Pompano were out first choice when we got out recently. Sheepshead will be the hot bite for the next few weeks. Cooler temps will help dramatically with both trout and sheepshead. He chill will slow down the snook bite but help us locate them easier by sending em back were they should be now. So like everything else in live there are two sides to everything.

It’s time to be planning our Spring and Summer snook and tarpon trips. We are looking forward to good catching earlier this year with the mild temps so far. King and Spanish Mackerel will be here soon and silver kings wont be far behind. I am still looking forward to some good snook, reds, and trout in February if the baitfish stay.
