Boca Grande - Saltwater Fishing Report

tarpon are hot.

Web 6-10-07

Finally the winds are down and catching is up.

We are enjoying summer weather and catching. Tarpon are as hot as the afternoon sun. Silver kings can be observed on the calm Gulf waters as the sun rises into a blue sky. The weather is closer to normal and fishing if fine. Snook have moved to the passes and some reds and trout are traveling with em. I saw a few pompano yesterday but have not tried them recently. Some kings and permit are still available if you can ride past the schools of tarpon. Life is great and business is good. The calendar has a few open days if your schedule will allow a fishy date on our waters.

Tarpon is the hot ticket this month here around Boca Grande. Fish migrate thru here in abundance now peaking late this month or early July. Weekends are challenging with lots of company but out piece of paradise is not a secret anymore. There are so many fish we can usually find a happy school to play with. Its prime time and the fish have made a big showing this past week. Reports are even more are on their way. We had some good catches last week with, Mel Weaver of Greenwood, SC. Had one strong trophy tarpon and that was all he wanted of them so we found a few snook and reds to spend the rest of the day on.

Sharon Emmos of Mannasota Key, took her husband Bruce to dance with the silver kings for his birthday in late May. He got a good hundred pounder plus his wife and niece each got to play with their own fish too. The tarpon are so exciting it’s fun to share the excitement with folks new to these big fish. The awesome power just can not be shared in words you need to experience this first hand. A giant silver rocket will imprint memories for ever.

Mike Cottrell of northern Ga. Came back down this summer and finally landed his tarpon on Friday morning. The winds had not calmed down so we had to work at it but Mike hooked and battled this one successfully. We found plenty of fish but they had not slowed down as much as they have now. We had some others jump off and even broke a big on off near the Pass.

Carolyn Quintero took her husband, Jim, fishing for his fortieth birthday on Saturday. They want to try some snook so I caught us a bunch of minnows and picked them up at Stump Pass marina to try our luck. We found a nice bunch of fish and got about a dozen before they slowed down and sent us looking. We looked around and found a few bigger snook and an over sized redfish to round our trip. They caught more snook that any other trip they had before. It is so nice to share these special memories with others.

Tommy and Mike Todd long time friends from St. Pete fished with us and caught a nice 25 pound kingfish. The fish rocketed on a live minnow and we all sat there jaws on the deck spellbound until the reel started to scream to pull us back. It is so much fun to share time on our beautiful waters with friends and family.

If our weather continues to cooperate our tarpon catching will just continue to improve. Snook are ready but they are catch and release. Reds and trout are in season for food and fun. Spanish and some kings are near shore, plus permit are not to much farther off shore. Fishing is fine and there are just a few weekdays open this month. The 15th, 20th and 21st are the open week days. Let’s go Fishin’ soon. Captain Van Hubbard [email protected]. Or www.captvan for more info.
